MEET THE TEAM

Rachael Mortimer

Rachael is a copy-editor and proofreader living in Wiltshire, UK. She has been editing and proofreading since 2015, and she trained with the Publishing Training Centre and the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading.

In her free time, she enjoys reading speculative fiction and watching fantasy and science fiction programmes and films. Her favourites include The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Witcher, The Umbrella Academy, and The Mandalorian.

If Rachael were stranded on a desert island, the two fantasy and/or science fiction novels she would want with her are the All Souls series by Deborah Harkness for the compelling characters and blend of fantasy, reality, and history, and The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski, which was the book that introduced her to the fascinating world of The Witcher.

“I have worked with Rachael on my last three books and hope she’ll finish out the series for me. As a fledgling author, she has taught me so much about writing. I am fortunate in the sense that I know the entire story for my ten-book series. There is no writer’s block with me, and I maintain a spreadsheet to help keep facts straight. I know every event and character within the series, both past and future. However, every time Rachael edits for me, she finds inconsistencies in my story. That never ceases to amaze me. It’s like she knows the details of the story better than I do! Without her, my work would suffer and I am indebted to her expertise.

I used other editors for my first two books and their attention to detail does not compare with Rachael’s. I recently read those books and there is a huge difference in the formatting between those and the three that Rachael has done for me. I see many errors I made in those early books after working with Rachael. I wish I had used her for the entire series.

And she is always a pleasure to work with. She humors me by addressing my questions when I ask about some of her changes. It’s hard for writers such as myself that have no training in writing, and we rely heavily on our editors. I know I’m in good hands with Rachael.”
